According to the definition of the standard GB 4806.1, food contact materials refer to all kinds of materials and products that have or are expected to come into contact with food or food additives, or their ingredients may be transferred to food under normal use conditions. Including food package materials, containers, tools and equipments being used in the course of food production, processing, packing, transportation, storage and sale and inks, adhesives and lubricants that may be direct or indirect contact with food. Detergents, disinfectants and public water delivery facilities are not included.

Food contact materials and products may affect the odor, taste and color of food during the period of contacting with food, and may release a certain amount of toxic and harmful chemical components such as heavy metals and toxic additives, which will migrate into food and ingested by the human body, thereby endangering human health.

As food safety issues become increasingly prominent, food contact materials as an important source of risky substances in food have attracted more and more attention. Countries have successively formulated regulations and standards for food contact materials, and implemented strict control.
