Special dietary food is specially processed or formulated food to meet special physical or physiological conditions, or to meet special dietary needs under conditions such as diseases and disorders. China has strict standard definitions for special dietary food. The National Food Safety Standard - Labeling of Prepackaged Special Dietary Food (GB 13432) clearly states that the categories of special dietary food mainly include: infant food, formulated food for special medical use, complementary food and nutritional supplements, nutrition food for sports and other special dietary food under other corresponding national standards.
According to Article 74 of Chapter IV of the Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China, the state implements strict supervision and management of special food such as health food, formulated food for special medical purposes, and formulated food for infants and young children.
On October 31, 2017, the State Food and Drug Administration issued a notice on regulating special food verification and evaluation work (No. 168 of 2017), stipulating the record-keeping management of technical institutions that undertake verification and evaluation such as product inspection, safety and functional verification and clinical trial related to the registration or record of special foods.
Up to now, the Nanjing, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Tianjin laboratories under the Food and Agriculture Division of the Ti Group have successively be qualified as the special food verification and evaluation technical institutions to undertake the verification and evaluation of the special food.
