According to the European Commission’s Renewable Fuels Directive, biofuels used in the EU must meet a series of sustainability requirements, including that the raw materials for biofuels shall not come from areas with high biodiversity, such as nature reserves, and areas with relatively high carbon storage such as forests or peatlands; in addition, the raw materials used in biofuel production shall not compete with food and feed crops.
International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a voluntary mechanism for the EU's sustainable certification of biomass energy. The mission of ISCC is to promote, facilitate and motivate the production, procurement, financing and use of sustainable products. ISCC hopes to contribute to the promotion of production and use of sustainable biomass and other raw materials in environmental, social and economic aspects. For this reason, ISCC has established a globally applicable high-quality certification system covering the entire supply chain. This system can be used to verify compliance with the sustainability requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and Fuel Quality Directive (FQD), and can be used to verify compliance with voluntary sustainability requirements in other markets. Chinese biofuel refined oil manufacturers and raw material suppliers certified by ISCC can export their products and raw materials to the EU biofuel market.
